Hi, I have just been diagnosed with gout. Researching the condition, it seems to me that the platelet donation may have been partly responsible for the gout. Gout is caused by the formation of uric acid crystals in the blood. These crystals gather at various joints in the body (especially the big toe joint) and will create painful arthritic-type flare-ups. These crystals are known to form when the blood plasma cools. Platelet donation involves drawing quantities of blood from the donor, removing the platelets from the blood in a machine, then returning the blood to the donor's bloodstream. In the few minutes out of the body, the blood cools and so the risk of crystal formation must be high - especially in donors with a higher level of uric acid in their blood. Please Help.
